St Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Thalassery is an educational institution in Malabar. It was started as an Anglo Indian school in the 16th century, run under the management of Latin Diocese of Kannur. It is located in the heart of Thalassery town, by the side of the Tellicherry Fort. The architecture of the school gives a view of the Arabian sea, even from the classrooms.

An Anglo Indian school was established as apart of the Holy Rosary Church which was established in the early years of 16th century. The Holy Rosary Church was under the Goa Arch bishop until 1609. It was one of the important Christian churches in Malabar. Later it became a part of the Kodungallur archdiocese. Then it became a part of the Calicut(Kozhikode) archdiocese and now a part of the Thalassery archdiocese. This English medium school was known as European school and Catholic middle school in its early days.

In 1922 an Italian missionary father John Baptist Galanta transformed the European school to an Indian middle school. Until September 1939 father Galanta was the headmaster and manager of the Indian middle school. Moorkoth Kumaran, who was one of the well known short story writers of early Malayalam literature, the municipal vice chairman of Thalassery during that period was the 1st assistant until 1930. In 1940 Sri.P.Kanari was appointed as the headmaster of this third forum (up to class 7th) school. There were 166 students during that time. 101 prominent citizens presented a memorandum in front of father Rodrigs and in 1941 Saint Josephs Boys' High School came into existence. There were 32 students in the first batch. It was as a result of the work of Father Rodrigs that the school obtained a double storied building, library and laboratory.

Father George Pathiyil was appointed as the head master of Saint Joseph's High School in 1952.

Sacred Heart Girls High School is an educational institution in Thalassery, situated in the heart of Thalassery town, in front of the Thalassery Fort. Sacred Heart Girls High School is run by Apostolic Carmel Corporate management.

History

Sacred Heart School was established in 1886. The construction of the school in 1886 was an ambitious undertaking of the young parish consisting of 424 families. Under Father Gerald Geary's leadership as pastor, the parishioners gave top priority to the establishment of a parish school. Archbishop John J.Mitty of the Archdiocese of San Francisco approved the building contract in 1956. The Ladies Guild and the Mens Club, along with the strong financial support of the parishioners, raised sufficient money to complete the eight-room building by 5th September 1957, the opening day of school.

Management

School is run by the Apostolic Carmel Corporate management which is dedicated to girls education. A Board of Management is responsible for the overall management and policy development of the School. The Board is composed of the Headmistress and parents with skills to contribute to the management of the School. The Management appoints the Head Mistress who is responsible for the employment of staff, after consultation with the Board of Management.

B E M P school thalassery

Basel Evangelical Mission Parsi (BEMP) School is arguably as old as the history of modern education in this town, which was once an important trading centre of the East India Company and the British administrative headquarters of the erstwhile Malabar. The school has undergone vast changes since it was started a century-and-a-half ago with just 74 students.

The school is celebrating its 150th anniversary with various functions. The celebration formally began here on Monday though it was on March 1, 1856, that the school was started as Basel German Mission School. It was later re-christened BEMP School as a mark of respect to Kaikose Ruderasha, a Parsi philanthropist who generously donated funds for the development of the school. The school, managed by the North Kerala Diocese of the Church of South India, was upgraded to a high school by Rev. C. Mueller who came here to assist German missionary Hermann Gundert.

The present building of the school, located in the centre of the town, was built in 1903. The spacious hall of the building, roof made of huge wooden beams, and old-style roof tiles add to its heritage value.

Those who taught at the school included Dr. Gundert, who compiled the first Malayalam dictionary, and Keeleri Kunhikannan, who served as gymnastic instructor at the school and was considered the father of the Indian circus.

Translator and author Thatha Kanaran who translated the works Walter Scott and Samuel Johnson served as the school headmaster. English scholar R. Mukunda Mallar worked as teacher at the school. P. Sankunni who served as Principal of Victoria College, Palakkad, was a product of the school. Malayalam satirist O. Chandu Menon, short story writer Murkot Kumaran, Communist leader A.K. Gopalan, freedom fighters I.K. Kumaran and Moyyarath Shankaran and socialist leader P.R. Kurup also studied at the school.

Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed, Reserve Bank of India deputy governor Vittal Das Leeladhar, retired administrator Murkot Ramunny, and the former Calicut University Vice-Chancellor A.N.P. Ummerkutty also studied at the school.

BEMP School at present has 1,150 students and is equipped with a library of 10,000-odd books

Mambaram higher secondary

Mambaram Higher Secondary School (MHSS) promoted by Mr. Mambaram P. Madhavan is located 10kms from Thalassery and 20kms from Kannur. Mambaram Higher Secondary School was founded in 1983 and is one of the biggest (and best) schools in the entire state of Kerala. Head master Mr. C. V Thilakaraj of MHSS won the President of India's medal for honorary services in 2005. Mr. Raveendran is the Principal of the school. Many prices won in the youth festivals and sports items, especially in swimming by the young courageous students in the school.
